The Heat announced early plans to build a statue of Wed back in January, hoping to have it unveiled ahead of the 21st anniversary of his professional debut. ( wintime999 )
It is believed that the model sent to the sculptor was based on the legendary shot in which Wade said, “This is my home,” during a game against the Chicago Bulls in 2009. However, when the statue was unveiled, it was hard not to be confused.
“Who the hell is this guy?” His opening remark at the ceremony drew laughter from the entire audience before getting serious.
“This is one of the finest sculptures ever created.”
“I didn’t play basketball to do this. I played basketball to change my life… and I can’t write a better script than what happened.”
Miami drafted Wade No. 5 in the 2003 class out of Marquette University, where he played 14 of his 16 professional seasons at South Beach.
Participated in three NBA championships in 2006, 2012 and 2013, and was named Finals MVP in the first Larry O’Brien Trophy.
