Aguero said his decision to skip France Football’s Ballon d’Or ceremony was due to his frustration at Vinicius missing out on the award, with the former Argentine striker believing Los Blancos felt privileged over others, and insisted Rodri deserved to win the prestigious prize as well.

‘It’s right, Rodri is the best player in the world. Football is for everyone, not just Real Madrid, they feel privileged,’ Kun said.

Real Madrid’s absence from the Ballon d’Or ceremony sparked controversy as they consider a number of high-profile players, with Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, Dani Carvajal and Toni Kroos all in contention after impressive seasons in which they won La Liga and the Champions League. 

A Real Madrid spokesperson released a statement after the awards ceremony, expressing the club’s disappointment in what they saw as a biased selection process that saw Vinicius miss out on the award, while Carvajal was also unfairly overlooked. 

Real Madrid won the 2024 Team of the Year award, as did Carlo Ancelotti, who won the Coach of the Year award, but no club representatives were present to receive the award.
