kindee1688 Liverpool boss Arne Schlott has explained the criticism he received over his lack of rotation and admitted he may have made the wrong decision as his side lost 2-1 to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final.
The Dutchman missed out on his first trophy with the Reds after losing to Newcastle in a game where he was underdogs in both form and physicality, and his team only managed to score a goal towards the end of the game. kindee1688
Schlott was criticised for making almost no changes in the Wembley final, despite the team having fought 120 minutes to a penalty shootout against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, and making only two changes, which clearly cost them the Magpies.
“Maybe, maybe, maybe I made the biggest mistake not rotating enough,” Schlot said.
“There wasn’t enough rotation in the line-up for the Newcastle game, but I think they had four days off in between and they got enough rest.
“But again, it’s too easy to say we were too physical. We have to give Newcastle everything they did because at the end of the day we conceded a corner. It wasn’t about sprinting or running back to defend or anything like that. It was just conceding a corner.
“He (Endo) deserves to play more if you look at the bigger picture of what he has done for the team, including in the League Cup.
“But as long as I’ve been here, for eight or nine months now, I think you’d be surprised if we were down 1-0 or 2-0 and I put on a player who has hardly ever scored, it would be a strange change.
“If we were 1-0 up you can expect me to bring Wata on. If it was a situation where we needed a goal like we did, I took Ibou off, brought a midfielder on, put Curtis on [Jones], Ryan [Gravenberg] as a right-back, Curtis as more of an attacking midfielder than Ryan, I brought Harvey [Elliott] who can score goals, I brought Federico [Chiesa] who can score goals, I had Darwin [Nunez] in the team, I had Cody [Gakpo] in the team, I had Mo [Mohamed Salah] in the team.
“So I have all the attacking players in the team and maybe after 10 minutes I agree with you that I should have taken someone off to bring on Wata, but it’s not often that a manager changes a player who has been on the pitch for 10 minutes.
“Maybe I made the wrong decision not to start him. It’s easy to say, but we never know.
“But we beat Newcastle with the players we started, at home, and we outplayed them in the second half at Newcastle with the players we started in the final, so there’s always a reason for the 11 we play.” ( kindee1688 )
