Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy remains confident in Cooper Rush and confirmed the 30-year-old quarterback will continue to play as the starter against the Houston Texans on Monday Night Football, according to ESPN.

“We have a lot of faith in Cooper,” McCarthy said. “Like I stood here last week, everybody has faith in him, and why wouldn’t you? But the fumbles and the effort he puts in, that makes it a little harder to get going. It just feels like he’s never really got into his rhythm.”

Rush, who started in place of Dak Prescott, who was sent to injured reserve with a hamstring issue, completed 13 of 26 passes for 45 yards and two fumbles, and was sacked. The 30-year-old is averaging just 1.96 yards per play, the fewest by a quarterback since 1990 with at least 20 attempts. 

“Everybody has confidence in Coop,” Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said. “Again, it wasn’t our best performance as an offensive team, for sure. It’s not just him. We’re all involved in that.”

The Cowboys brought on Trey Lance in place of Rush for the final quarter after playing two snaps in the third quarter, and the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback finished the game by completing 4-of-6 passes for 21 yards, no score, one interception, two sacks and carrying the ball three times for 17 yards.

“We put him in the first series, tried to give us a spark, then we got to third down, and I felt like he didn’t really practice that situation,” McCarthy said of Lance. “But then he went into the series with the situation that we were in, and I thought he did some good things, and certainly some things he can learn.
