New England Patriots head coach Jarrod Mayo revealed that he has brought old friend Donte Hightower, three-time Super Bowl champion, back to work with the Patriots as linebackers coach. Ger, according to a report from NBC Sports Boston on Wednesday.  ( sakidbet  )

Hightower, 33, played professionally with the Patriots from 2012-2021 and was a part of winning three Super Bowls. He also played with the Mayo from 2012-2021. 2015 before the latter returned to work as inside linebackers coach in 2019 until becoming the new head coach after Bill Belichick this off-season. 

‘Hightower, he was my little brother when he came here. And one of the smartest players I’ve ever been with,’ Mayo said. ‘We’ve been talking about this for a while. I’ll tell you honestly. We had been talking for a while and Hightower had always wanted to be a coach. He is a coach on the field. He was definitely the one who picked up the torch and ran with it.’

Throughout his career, Hightower has 569 tackles, 27 sacks, 18 pass deflections and two interceptions. He also has two touchdowns as a defensive player for the Patriots.

‘For the championship and the leadership skills he has, it’s very important,’ Mayo added of Hightower. ‘But it’s not like yesterday, ‘Hey man, do you want to be my linebackers coach?’ This is a search. widely’ 

Mayo became head coach at the age of 37 after starting his coaching career in 2019, and with Hightower in a similar position, Mayo took the time to offer advice to his new linebackers coach.

‘Just be a sponge. The same way when he came in as a player,’ Mayo said. ‘Just try to learn from as many people as possible.’

Mayo also credits defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington, 34, with his promotion from defensive line coach. This will be a model guideline for Hightower’s work as a new coach as well.

‘You have guys like DeMarcus Covington starting on offense and moving to defense. quality control suddenly He’s coaching linebackers without linebacker tags,’ Mayo said. ‘He’s going to the front. But he has extensive knowledge of different position groups. Additionally, I would say he really helped me with the background. Both training and stuff like that, Steve (Belichick) helps me out as well. But I’ve spent a lot of time with (Covington) and am confident in what he’s taught me, so with Hightower he should do the same.’
