Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said he’s not concerned about several quarterbacks signing new deals this offseason that will see them earn an average of $10 million or more per year than him, USA Today Sports reports. ( vox888 )
While quarterback contracts are getting more valuable these days, Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love signed a four-year, $220 million deal that will earn him an average annual salary of $55 million, putting him in line with Cincinnati Bengals Joe Burrow and Jacksonville Jaguars Trevor Lawrence.
Mahomes, the most successful quarterback in the league with three Super Bowl titles and two MVP awards, has become an instant bargain since signing a 10-year, $503 million deal in the summer of 2020. But the 28-year-old isn’t worried about that.
“It’s great for the game of football,” Mahomes said. “It’s great for the quarterback position, but I think every position, I know every time there’s a contract, everybody’s looking at my APY (average annual salary) and things like that. I’ve done my part pretty well.”
‘For me, it’s about going out and trying to win football games, trying to make money for my family at the end of the day. I feel like I’m doing a really good job at that.’
Mahomes is currently paid $45 million per year on a contract that runs through 2031, which is a lower average than the slate of underperforming quarterbacks Jordan Love, Trevor Lawrence, Jared Goff and Tua Tagovailoa, who all signed new deals this offseason. Three of them are paid more than $10 million per year more than Mahomes.
Mahomes is willing to follow in the footsteps of legendary quarterback Tom Brady in accepting less money to save salary cap space at the New England Patriots, and the 28-year-old reportedly restructured his contract last offseason to earn a guaranteed $210.6 million from 2023-26, the biggest four-year deal in NFL history.
‘Not necessarily,’ Mahomes said when asked if he was underpaid. ‘I think we did a good job of managing the money, paying me a lot of money and having a good team around me. I know we restructured a couple of times and got some cash flow coming in at some points and some years.’
‘It’s about good conversations, good communication with the management and the owners, which we’ve done here, and because we’ve been able to make me a high-paid man while building a great team around me at the same time.’
“We did a great job,” Mahomes said of his previous contract restructuring. “When I restructured it, the last time I moved money, we talked about maybe in a year we’re going to do it again.”
‘It’s about having a plan, constant communication and we have that here. I’m happy to see people go out and make as much money as they can. That’s great for the sport, but here we have a great communication system and I feel like we did the best we could with what we could.’
