Houston Texans cornerback Derek Stingley has revealed after signing a three-year, $90 million, $89 million guaranteed deal that it was a life-changing deal, although it’s not the norm, ESPN reports. Kodma168

From the perspective of the former No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 draft, it makes sense, given that he’s become one of the league’s top cornerbacks who will have to try his best to keep up with top wide receivers like Jamar Chase, who just signed a four-year, $161 million deal with the Cincinnati Bengals. 

The new deal with the Texans makes Stingley the first cornerback in the league to earn an average annual salary of $30 million, surpassing the Miami Dolphins’ Jalen Ramsey and the Denver Broncos’ Patrick Surtain. 

“Wide receivers are starting to get into the $40 million (a year) range,” Stingley said. “(We’re) the ones that are out there competing with them. I think it’s good that cornerbacks and other defensive positions are starting to climb as well, but I think it’s good for the sport. Obviously, as time goes on, it’s going to keep increasing, so I’m excited to see who’s going to make these deals (next).”

“For them to let me go out there with my coaches and have them teach me about the game and at this level means a lot,” the 23-year-old cornerback added. “They believe that I can be someone who can teach the next generation of guys on this team. I won’t say it in front of everybody, but I know how to be a good teammate. I guess they believe in that, and that’s what I believe in too.” ( Kodma168 )
