Kodma168 John Spitek insists he can’t pass up the opportunity to reunite Gino Smith with Pete Carroll
Las Vegas Raiders general manager John Spitek said a trade for 34-year-old quarterback Geno Smith from the Seattle Seahawks was an opportunity too good to pass up, NFL Network reports. Kodma168
Spitek took over as Raiders general manager this offseason, along with Pete Carroll, who joined as head coach, before selecting Smith as the new quarterback two months later, based on the 34-year-old’s skills and experience, as well as his past relationship with Carroll.
“As we started to do that and evaluate the options in free agency, the other players that we might get in trades, we finally got to the point where we thought adding Geno made a lot of sense for us,” Spitek said. “In our opinion, it elevates the position. It’s not that expensive from a draft capital perspective. I mean, I love my picks more than anybody else, and I have to remind Coach Carroll how much I love my picks.”
‘But listen, we used the third-round pick in the hopes that our starting quarterback would be with us for years to come, and it was too good an opportunity to pass up.’
‘There’s obviously a familiarity with the coaches and Gino from Seattle, and Gino played his best football with the coaches there, and when you watch Gino over the years, he’s got the best throws of any of them. You see his throws over and over again on the field, short, mid-range, touch, arm strength. ‘
‘In my press conference, I feel like the coaches and I emphasized that we don’t overlook any details at any position, but the most important one is the quarterback position. We try to be involved in every possible move at quarterback.’
‘We’re thrilled to have Gino here and can’t wait to see what he can do for our team.’ ( Kodma168 )
