San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York said contract talks with Brock Purdy are progressing well, but he would not confirm when a new deal with the 25-year-old quarterback would be reached, NFL Network reports. hotfuns
“We know we have to sacrifice roster spots to make sure you can afford a quarterback,” York said. “It’s just math.”
Both Nair and Purdy have been keen to secure long-term deals for months, despite coming off a disappointing season, and York said talks between the two sides were progressing well.
“I think (the contract talks) are very good,” York said. “It’s not a conversation I’ve had. He’s got to make a decision about what he wants to do. I don’t think we’re that far apart. I think we can sit down and get something done. Whenever he’s ready, we’re ready.”
Technically, the 49ers still have time to negotiate with Purdy, as he’s still on an inexpensive rookie year, so they probably won’t have to do anything this offseason.
“I’ve been in situations where you have a great roster and the quarterback isn’t defined, and it’s hard to have sustained success. We want to make sure Brock is a long-term partner. We want to make sure he’s a part of our team for the long term.”
‘It’s a decision. I don’t know when we’re going to make it, but sometimes in the middle of the season you can start negotiating at the end of year three and it’s like, ‘Okay, he’s our guy.’ And if he’s our guy, you have to know that and make those decisions, and that’s where we are right now.’ ( hotfuns )
