Barcelona’s 17-year-old centre-back Pau Gubarsi has said it was an honour for him to attend the Ballon d’Or gala in Paris after being named a finalist for the Kopa Trophy award ahead of team-mate Lamine Yamal, RAC1 reported on Friday.

Gubarsi and Yamal broke through to Barcelona’s first-team at a young age before rising to become key players for the Blaugrana, but the routine serves as a reminder to Gubarsi of the unusual circumstances the pair face.

‘I’m in my last year of secondary school (at Secon de Batsierrat). I train in the morning and go to class at 3 p.m. A teacher from Leon comes and I study until 8 p.m. If there’s a Champions League game, I have to look at my notes or listen carefully the next day to catch up. Sometimes studying is difficult, but I want to do a degree in marketing or business administration, but first I have to finish high school and then we’ll see,’ Gubarsi said.

Gubarsi also spoke about Real Madrid’s Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior, who missed out on the Ballon d’Or award, which went to Manchester City’s Spanish midfielder Rodrigo Hernandez. The 17-year-old centre-back said he was not surprised because Rodri was also deserving of the award.

‘To be in the top 10 or 20 of the Ballon d’Or is already a good award and it is important for a footballer to have it. Dani Olmo and I went there without it. I am not surprised that Vinicius did not win it because Rodri was very close. It is good that a Spanish player wins it.’ 

Before mentioning teammate Yamal, he said: ‘Lamine? Everyone knows what he is now, but I’ve known him for years and I think he has the ability to win this award. I think he has no limits. He’s at a great level. You never know how far he can go. He’s walking with so much confidence.'( vox888 )
