Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has hit back at criticism of the FIFA Club World Cup as he believes it is a “great tournament” in his opinion, Mundo Deportivo reported on Wednesday.

‘We have to consider the little differences of the competition, the days we will play. For example, the Nations League before was not the best, there was not much time to rest. We have to look for more balance and then this will be a great tournament.’

Courtois made it two clean sheets in a row as he edged past Juventus 1-0 in the last 16 after a 3-0 victory over Salzburg in their final group game, and the Belgian goalkeeper revealed he is happy with Real Madrid’s defensive system under Xavier Alonso. 

‘The whole team’s defensive commitment was very good. That’s the main thing. We did very well. When you don’t concede goals, it’s always better.’
