‘El Cholo’ Diego Simeone, Atletico Madrid’s trainer, admits that the Atletico team must improve their performance after the 0-3 defeat to Barcelona if they are not to leave the top spot. That raises concerns for Simeone, who knows all too well the tensions this creates. After the Argentinian trainer led the Atletico team to win a ticket to play in the Champions League for the past 11 seasons. But there is a risk of falling out of the top 4 this season. 

‘In the league we have to move forward. We need to improve,’ Simeone admitted. ‘Now we will have a break. It was an intense January and February. And we will prepare for the away game against Villarreal (Monday 1 April). The championship will require us to fight until the end.’

‘After winning La Liga the following year it was difficult for us, competing in three tournaments is not easy. We have to improve because other teams are improving as well. We are in the process of that, we will do it and we look forward to seeing it.’

‘The team knows exactly what their main goals are year after year. We need to discuss this internally with the club. But we have to improve. No doubt.’
