Defending champions Leverkusen have had a poor start to the season, with their defensive performances leading to conceding 15 goals in all of their last eight games, a move that Granit admits needs to be addressed. 

‘These goals are about communication. If we talk more on the pitch and help each other a little bit, whether it’s left, right, forward, behind, we’ll be closer to the opponent,’ Xhaka said of conceding the goal in the latest game.

Asked about Leverkusen’s overall defensive situation, which has failed to keep a clean sheet in the Bundesliga this season, Xhaka said: ‘If you concede two goals per game, you cannot win at this level. In the current situation, we don’t need to look ahead, but we have to see how we can manage not to concede goals. That was our strength last season.
