The Browns agreed to send three first-round draft picks in a trade for Watson from the Houston Texans in 2022, before signing a five-year, $230 million, fully guaranteed contract extension that led to former 2018 draft pick Baker Mayfield being traded to the Carolina Panthers. Now, Haslam is admitting that the decision they made three years ago was a mistake.
“We took a big risk and made a mistake with DeShaun,” Haslam said. “We thought we had a quarterback, and we didn’t even though we gave up a lot of draft picks to get him. So we dug ourselves a hole. (That) was a decision that was made by the organization and it ended up being made by Dee and me, so we have to take responsibility.”
Watson missed the first 11 games of the 2022 season after being suspended for violating the league’s personal conduct policy, then played in just six games in 2023 after a right shoulder injury ended his season prematurely. The following season, Watson played in just seven games after suffering a torn Achilles tendon.
After being traded from the Texans, Watson has played in just 19 games, going 9-10, throwing for 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. The Browns are now trying their best to find their next franchise quarterback, although Haslam hasn’t shown much enthusiasm for selecting him with the No. 2 overall pick in the draft later this month.
“It would be great if we got a ‘quarterback,’ but we’re not going to rush it,” Haslam said. “We’re going to be patient and try to get as many good football players as we can.”
The Browns currently have two quarterbacks on the roster in Kenny Pickett and Watson who are likely out for the rest of next season, meaning they’ll need to add at least one more quarterback through the draft, free agency or trade, which could be Atlanta Falcons’ Kirk Cousins or a familiar face in Joe Flacco.
