The ‘USA’ lost face when they were the host of a major tournament co-hosted by the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), but only managed to win over Bolivia in the opening group stage. However, they then unexpectedly lost to Panama and then lost to Uruguay, so they had to be eliminated from the tournament. 

That’s why the executives voted to oust the 50-year-old coach from his position. 

The decision was made to bring in ‘Poch’, who has no experience managing a national team before, but is ready to accept the challenge of building a formidable American soccer team ahead of the 2026 World Cup tournament, which they will co-host with Mexico and Canada.

The Argentine coach’s track record includes spells with Espanyol, Southampton, Spurs, PSG and Chelsea, but he recently voluntarily left Stamford Bridge after serving a one-year term at the end of the 2023-24 season. 

Pochettino’s official debut is a friendly against Panama (Oct 12), before the challenge of Mexico (Oct 15).

The team’s latest performance in the period was a 1-1 draw with New Zealand , while the previous result was a 1-2 loss to Canada.
