Holmes has previously said in public that he is open to a business deal, particularly a trade for the No. 2 overall pick in the 2022 draft, before revealing that he has spoken with two teams interested in doing business with the Detroit Lions.
‘We’ve spoken to a couple of teams,’ Holmes said. ‘I wouldn’t say it’s a lot, but there are a few teams we’ve spoken to.’
In the process of rebuilding the team and with so many different needs, it makes sense for the Lions to trade down to accumulate more draft picks, but if no transaction occurs, Detroit could select an offensive tackle while the Jacksonville Jaguars, who own the No. 1 pick, will likely select an edge rusher. Holmes has stated his intention to trade down rather than select at that position on April 28.
“I expect it to heat up,” Holmes said. “Especially with the options we have this year because it heated up at No. 7 last year. I expect there to be more discussion.”
But if no business is being done, Holmes is open to selecting players. ‘There are a lot of players at a lot of positions. If we turn the tables today, we can turn the tables today and sleep well at night. That’s a testament to everyone in our building, our personnel, that we’re ahead of the curve in this process, with our scouts. ‘
