New Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Mohr said he’s not worried about the young quarterback room, believing he and his staff can make a difference in the wake of Derek Carr’s abrupt retirement, but he won’t rule out signing more experienced quarterbacks, NFL Network reports. ( zbet911 )
Carr’s retirement leaves the Saints with only young quarterbacks, with Spencer Rattler, 24, the most experienced, after the former fifth-round 2024 draft pick started six games last season, while Jake Hener, 26, started just once. Second-round rookie Tyler Shuck could step into the starting role right away, and undrafted rookie Hunter Deckers have also been signed.
“There are certainly times when if there’s an opportunity, you feel like it’s a good fit. We want to do it,” Mohr said when asked about signing another experienced quarterback.
‘We feel like we have a lot of good guys here that can mentor each other as well as go through this process. I feel like our quarterback room has some experience in that area in the sense that myself, (offensive linebackers coach) Doug Nassermeier, (quarterbacks coach) Scott Tolsen, all of us have some experience in that area, both from a player and coaching perspective. We feel like we have a good room there, but obviously we’re always trying to improve our roster, so it could happen.’
‘We’ll see how this all goes. The roster has been dynamic and dynamic throughout the off-season process. We feel good right now. We feel like we have some young players. We’re excited to get on the field and contribute.’
‘We’re going to give them a lot of opportunities. It’s exciting to see them go out there, learn, grow, play well, make some mistakes, and that’s the whole point of this process.’
“They’re a young, energetic group,” Saints general manager Mickey Loomis added. “They’re a young, energetic group. There’s a lot of talent there. I think we’ve got a great coaching staff. I’m excited and excited to see how it goes.”
