Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce has yet to decide whether he will make a change at quarterback after taking Gardner Minshew off the field and starting Aidan O’Connell late in the third quarter of Sunday’s 34-18 loss to the Denver Broncos, NFL Network reports. ( wintime999 )
Minshew completed 12 of 17 passes for 137 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions before being pulled from the game midway through the third quarter with the Raiders trailing 10-20. O’Connell, who came on as his replacement, completed 10 of 20 passes for no touchdowns and one interception.
Asked if he would make a change at quarterback in next weekend’s Week 6 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pierce replied: “I don’t know. I don’t have an answer to that question yet.”
Minshew got the game off to a flying start, throwing a pass to rookie wide receiver Brock Bowers for a 57-yard score and helping the Pirates take a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Minshew then threw a punt into the end zone for a touchdown in the second quarter, but was intercepted by Mustang cornerback Patrick Surtain.
“It looked like it was thrown a little too high, just from my perspective,” Pierce said of the missed interception.
Through four games and three quarters, Minshew has completed 99 of 140 passes for 1,014 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions, but it remains to be seen whether Pierce will decide to let O’Connell step up as the starting quarterback against the Steelers.
