Former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is embarking on a new career path after the 27-year-old signed to the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad, with head coach Kevin O’Connell revealing Jones would join the team on Friday morning, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported. vox888

Jones’ nearly six-year stint with the Giants, where he was selected as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 draft, came to an end after the Giants officially released the 27-year-old quarterback on Monday, before signing with the Vikings’ practice squad on Wednesday. 

“He’s a great addition to our quarterback room,” O’Connell said of Jones. “I’ve always been a big fan of Jones. I love the guy, the personality, the players that Daniel Jones is. I think he’s got a lot of great things ahead of him. I can’t wait to get to work with him.” 

Signing with the Vikings is a sensible move for Jones, even though he won’t be competing for a starting role unless Sam Darnold is injured. But the 27-year-old quarterback could develop under O’Connell, who has a reputation for coaching quarterbacks in the past.

“The player development side and the quarterback development side is something that I am very passionate about,” O’Connell said. “I love getting the opportunity to work with players no matter where they are in their quarterback journey. Our system is really built to help players realize their true potential.”

The Vikings lost rookie first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy to a preseason knee injury that kept him out of action for the rest of the season, and O’Connell chose Darnold as the starting quarterback, who returned to playing with confidence and helped the team to a 9-2 record with Nick Mullens as his backup.  ( vox888 )
