The New Orleans Pelicans are set to hire former Charlotte Hornets head coach James Borrego as associate head coach, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Saturday. 

Borrego, 45, who was the Hornets’ head coach from 2018-2022, turned down several other opportunities to take on a top assistant job in New Orleans. The Pelicans also retained Jarron Collins, who served as Willie Green’s assistant head coach the past two seasons, after Collins was a finalist in the Detroit Pistons’ head coaching search before the job went to Monty Williams. 

Green just completed his second season as head coach of the Pelicans before the franchise brought in Borrego, citing his fondness for the 45-year-old’s offensive philosophy, which could be a good fit for a group of players like Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum next season. Injuries played a key role in New Orleans finishing 20th in offensive rating last year and second-to-last in 3-point field goal attempts per game.

Borrego led the Hornets to a 43-39 record in the 2021-2022 season and led the team to two consecutive play-in appearances before being fired in April 2022. Superheng1688
