Dallas Cowboys second-year defensive tackle Macy Smith believes the arrival of Jordan Phillips will strengthen the defense and the 31-year-old veteran will help him in the long run, NFL Network reports. ( wintime999 )

Smith, a former first-round pick in the 2023 draft class, welcomed Phillips’ arrival after the Cowboys completed a trade from the New York Giants last week as new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer desperately needed depth on defense. 

“I know Jordan Phillips very well,” Smith said. “He’s a very good player. He’s a veteran of the game, and when you add that to a team, iron sharpens iron. That’s what you want. You want a room full of competition. You don’t want anybody to feel relaxed.” 

Smith played in all 17 games of his rookie season (three starts), making at least one tackle per game, totaling 13 tackles, including three forced fumbles, three quarterback pressures and one sack. 

“Jordan Phillips and I will talk,” Smith said. “Just look at how they run the business. You see veterans and players who have been doing this for 11 years. They’ve been in the NFL for a long time, and that’s not easy. So when you have someone come in and do something like that,”

‘First of all, it’s respect. Then you look at them and see what they’ve done and see what you haven’t done.’
