The Azzurri are set to face Belgium and Israel in the UEFA Nations League, and during a press conference, Spalletti spoke about the call-up of Maldini and Pisilli to the squad.
“He is the player we expected,” Spalletti said of Maldini. “He plays beautifully, he knows what to do against defenders and it’s hard to chase him. He knows how to play in front of goal. Sometimes he can disappear from the game but I’ve seen him play continuously and he’s grown a lot.”
“Let’s see how being here will affect him. I’m sure being here will help him. He’ll be encouraged to play more consistently because sometimes he’s out of the game. I like talking to him because there are a lot of opportunities for him.”
As for Pisilli, Spalletti said: “Looking at Pisilli, he seems like a very good midfielder. He knows how to play on both sides and he is someone who is always ready to show himself.”
“De Rossi told me that he always scores against small teams. He always shows up. He is agile and energetic. He is someone who can do everything. He can be part of our history.”
“I think he deserves to be here with us and now everyone is aware of that as well. We have to test things here. Now I have called up 23 players. I don’t need two more players to play five or six minutes and then they feel left out.”
