Mathieu underperformed in 2024 and was expected to be the starting safety alongside Justin Reed in 2025, but the 33-year-old ultimately decided to retire. 

“I was a little bit surprised, but we got a heads up,” Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said of Mathieu’s retirement. “I have a lot of respect for Tyrann and what he’s accomplished. I mean, he’s a Louisiana legend, an NFL legend. I appreciate his time with us. He’s been great. He’s had a great career.”

Since entering the league as a third-round draft pick in the 2013 class, Mathieu spent the first five years of his professional career with the Arizona Cardinals, before moving to the Houston Texans in 2018, before moving to the Kansas City Chiefs from 2019-2021, and the Saints from 2022 until he eventually decided to retire. 

During his 12-year career, Mathieu was named an All-Pro three times, a Pro Bowl three times and won a Super Bowl with the Chiefs in 2019. 

Mathieu’s retirement leaves the Saints looking for additional safety, with Justin Simmons, Julian Blackmon and Quandre Diggs likely to be signed from free agents. ( popslot )
