Jacksonville Jaguars wide receivers coach Edgar Bennett said he is looking forward to Brian Thomas Jr.’s sophomore season after the 22-year-old wide receiver enjoyed a breakout rookie season, The Florida Times-Union reports. popslot
Thomas, a former first-round draft pick in the 2024 class, had an impressive rookie season, catching 87 passes on 133 targets for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns.
‘I’ve been watching the game and I’ve been getting more and more excited about who he is, what he’s doing,’ Bennett said of Thomas. ‘I was surprised because when I first got here people told me how he carried himself, he was very quiet and confident. But on game day he looked different and I liked that about him. I could see it straight away.’
Even though the Jaguars lost Trevor Lawrence to a Week 9 injury, Thomas was productive, catching 48 passes for 611 yards and four touchdowns, giving Bennett confidence the 22-year-old wide receiver will be even better in his second season.
‘He’s definitely not resting. He doesn’t have that. That’s not him,’ Bennett said. ‘He always thinks when you talk to him, he’s always got that line that he wants to be number one, and because of that, he’s dedicated and that’s his way of doing it.’
‘He’s dedicated. His effort is there every day and it starts in the classroom. As soon as he walks through the door, it seems like he’s in that mode. Whether it’s in the classroom, the hallway, the training ground, the gym, whatever it is, he’s giving it his all.’
Bennett is also confident Thomas will guide and help push No. 2 overall pick Travis Hunter to make an impact. ‘He’s definitely taking a more hands-on approach and leadership role, and he’s speaking up, and not just in terms of words, he’s leading by example. So that’s another way he’s helping everybody in the room.’ ( popslot )
