McCarthy’s future is unclear as his contract expires at the end of the season, while the Cowboys are a disappointing 4-7 and have lost all five home games leading up to Thursday’s game against the New York Giants, but the 61-year-old head coach could still be offered a new deal, according to team owners.

“I don’t think it’s crazy,” Jones said of McCarthy’s extension. “That’s not crazy. Listen, Mike McCarthy is a great coach. This is a Super Bowl-winning coach. Mike McCarthy has had experience. He’s got a lot of good ideas. Bottom line, there was never in my body language or anything else that you saw any indication that we were going to do anything about this staff at the end of the year. And we shouldn’t have. We’ve got a lot of football coming.”

McCarthy led the Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl title in 2010. In five seasons with the Cowboys, he went 1-3 in the playoffs after leading Dallas to three straight 12-5 seasons. He began his coaching career in Dallas with a 6-10 record in 2020.
