Barrett signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins in March, before the two-time Pro Bowl linebacker took to Instagram in July to announce his retirement, citing a desire to spend more time with his family. His agent later revealed that the 32-year-old has filed for reinstatement, with the Dolphins still holding onto his contract.
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel previously said he was surprised to hear that Barrett wanted to return this season, but he was unavailable for comment on how the Dolphins would handle the 32-year-old linebacker and has not had contact with the player since he announced his retirement before the Dolphins opened training camp in July.
Barrett spent five seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, helping them win a Super Bowl in 2020 under quarterback Tom Brady, before being released by the Pirates at the end of last season to reduce their payroll.
The linebacker and his family suffered a tragedy in April 2023 when his 2-year-old daughter, Arrayah, drowned in their home pool, but Barrett returned early in the 2023 season, totaling 52 tackles and 4.5 sacks. He has a combined 59 sacks over the course of his nine-season career with the Buccaneers and Denver Broncos. ( player1688 )
