Phillips was handed his first pre-season friendly by Guardiola and was named in the starting XI for 45 minutes of the first half before being substituted at half-time as Celtic trailed 3-1.

Asked about Phillips’ future ahead of the 2024-25 season, Pep said: “We’ll see. He trained really well. He had a good first half against Celtic.”

“He’s come back from an injury, that’s why we didn’t want to give him more time (45 minutes) but we’ll see, he knows the situation,” Guardiola said.

Phillips has not been able to replicate his best form since his time at Leeds United and England and has not fit into Guardiola’s style of play.

The 28-year-old midfielder was expected to leave the club last season but was loaned out to West Ham United, where he also underperformed, preventing a permanent move from happening. ( vox888  )
