Odegaard has been with Real Madrid since the age of 16 but has struggled to make a regular first-team debut, spending four spells on loan, the last two of which were with Arsenal, before moving permanently in the summer of 2021 for £30m.

Ancelotti, who worked with Odegaard during his first spell at Real Madrid, said of his former player: “Martin Odegaard was a talent when he came to Real Madrid at 16, and he is as talented now as he is now.”

“When he arrived at the club he was very young, he didn’t have the chance to play in the first team because he had (Cristiano) Ronaldo, (Karim) Benzema and James Rodriguez in front of him.”

“There was no room for him to prove his quality. He decided to move somewhere else for a chance to play. He moved to one of the best clubs in the Champions League.”
