Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield believes the Pirates are better than ever as they head into the 2024 season in their bid to win a fourth consecutive NFC South title, NFL Network reports.  ( wilson88 )

“This division, obviously, is going to continue to evolve,” Mayfield said. “Everybody wants to hate the NFC South, but it’s a very competitive division.” 

There’s plenty of statistical evidence to show why the NFC South is so hated, according to Mayfield. Part of it is the 29-year-old quarterback’s incredible run, which has led the Buccaneers to three straight division titles, his first career Pro Bowl appearance and his new three-year, $100 million contract, with $50 million guaranteed. 

Since the 2021 season, the NFC South has been the worst division in the NFC and the second-worst in the NFL after Tom Brady led the Buccaneers to Super Bowl 55. The Drew Brees-led New Orleans Saints have dominated the division, winning it four straight years (2017-2020). 

The Buccaneers are 30-21, the best in the NFC South since 2021, while the Saints are 25-26, the Atlanta Falcons are 21-30 and the Carolina Panthers are 14-37. The division’s overall record is 90-114, second-worst in the NFL behind the AFC South, which is 85-117. 

The Buccaneers are now looking to win their fourth consecutive division title, although the Blackhawks finished 9-8 last season, tied with the Saints. 

“We started doing the little things right, and that’s why we’ve been emphasizing everybody to do their part and pay more attention to the details this year,” Mayfield said. “That’s why I think we’ve improved in the offseason and training camp.”

‘That’s why I feel like we can say we’re unique. It’s different when you go out there and play your game and you see how good you really are against other defenses, but we feel like we know who we are right now.’
