Football Insider revealed earlier this week that the Magpies are reluctant to let the 26-year-old midfielder leave the club on a free transfer in 2025.

But his current contract expires at the end of this season and the Newcastle academy graduate is set to open pre-contract talks with overseas clubs in January.

The midfielder is in a tough position but is believed to be keen to stay at St James’ Park and sign a long-term deal.

Sources say manager Eddie Howe wants Longstaff to stay at the club beyond the end of the season.

He remains a key figure in midfield despite the big-money signings in recent seasons.

He has continued to play for the Magpies this season, with Sandro Tonali returning from a lengthy suspension and working his way back to full fitness.

Longstaff, 26, made 46 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring eight goals.
