United have just sacked Erik ten Hag as manager after a 2-1 defeat at West Ham at the weekend, leaving the Red Devils 14th in the Premier League, seven points above the relegation zone, without a win in three Europa League matches.   ( Kindee1688 )

During the process of selecting a new manager, United will keep Van Nistelrooy in charge temporarily, partly to monitor the team’s skills and direction over the four games before the international break in November. 

Starting with the Carabao Cup against Leicester, a tough League 2 match against Chelsea and the Foxes, and a Europa League clash against PAOK Diva, all at home. 

As an old friend, Neville has suggested a 3-4-2-1 formation would be more suitable than a four-man backline given the current options available to the Red Devils. 

“It’s almost impossible for a caretaker manager to turn things around in two or three days,” he told Sky Sports.
