Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton believes veteran wide receiver Evan Engram can play the joker role to help Bo Nix power the Broncos offense into the 2025 season, NFL Network reports. cup1688

Engram, a former New York Giants and Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver, signed a two-year, $23 million deal with the Broncos this offseason to add more firepower to second-year quarterback Nix at the expense of Peyton.

“I would put him in that category or that family,” Peyton said of Engram. “He’s a guy with those skills.” 

‘The vision is pretty clear. Obviously, he’s a guy that we think can run and give us a threat with third downs and (in) the red zone. I think he’s got good body control and I think he’s really good when he gets the ball in his hands. His run-after-the-catch stats are pretty good. ‘

Peyton’s offense has always been characterized by physical players who can beat the middle of the field with inside receivers like Jimmy Graham and Jeremy Shockey, and the Mustangs coach has tried to find the type of player to bring to Denver.

“We’ve been talking about this for two years, the inner triangle of your throwing game is inside wide receiver, running back and third wide receiver,” Payton said. “When you see a lot of coverage like that, those positions have to grow. The logistical answer to your question is, Engram is closer to Bo than the wide receiver at times.”

‘It’s hard to play that inside line if you can’t attack the inside triangle of some of the formations we get on defense. This will help Bo.’

‘It helps the whole team, it just opens up the middle of the field a little bit more. That’s what we’re missing, that explosive element that we’re missing in the middle of the field. As  we’ve talked about, he’s a mismatched type of player, so that only helps the quarterbacks.’ ( cup1688 )
