Cleveland Browns left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr., 25, admitted he was shocked when head coach Kevin Stefanki removed him from the starting position to make way for second-year tackle DeVand Jones, ESPN reports. cosmo365
Wills said it was his decision not to play against the Baltimore Ravens on Oct. 27 due to a left knee injury he underwent surgery on in December. Jones started the game and led the Browns to an upset win over the Ravens before Stefanski informed Wills he would no longer be playing.
Wills is reportedly reduced to a swing tackle role, supporting Jones at left tackle and Jack Conklin at right tackle after the former 2020 first-round draft pick started all 57 games he has been fit.
“It was a shock,” Wills said. “I mean, I made my own decision. I made a business decision not to play after the Bengals game, going into the Ravens game because I was injured, and then the next week I got the news.”
Asked if Stefanski misinterpreted his decision not to play, Wills replied: ‘I’m not sure, maybe.’
‘I don’t think the word dissatisfied is a good word. I would say it’s more like it’s frustrating. But I mean, it’s not my decision. I just do what I can.’
Wills is in the final year of his rookie contract, worth $14.175 million, and it’s possible that Browns management no longer sees him as part of the future. Meanwhile, the 6-foot-8 Jones had a breakout rookie season playing right tackle in place of the injured Conklin.
“I’m not trying to say anything about (Wills),” Stefanski said. “I’m just trying to get Dewand on the pitch and let him get better. Jed is still a player we believe in and he’s got to be ready to go now.” ( cosmo365 )
