Atletico Madrid’s new midfielder Alex Baena has thanked his former club Villarreal after joining the club’s youth system since the age of 10, rising through the ranks to join the first team and eventually joining the Rojiblancos this summer, Diario AS reported on Thursday. 

Baena, 23, has signed a five-year contract with Atletico Madrid after joining from Villarreal for an initial fee of €42m plus €13m in add-ons, split into two parts – an €8m deal that is easy to meet and a €5m deal that is harder to meet. 

“I never thought this day would come,” Baena wrote on Instagram. “The day I left home, I will never leave because I will never forget the experience of Villarreal, a club that welcomed me since I was a child. I feel like I am part of the ‘Groqueta’ family that has given me so much over the years.”

‘I am very happy here because football has given me a great club, for which I will be forever grateful.’

‘I’m leaving, but a part of me will always be with Villarreal. I’m proud of everything we’ve built together with all the colleagues I’ve shared this extraordinary journey with.’
