Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has full confidence in Carson Wentz if the 31-year-old backup quarterback is set to lead the Chiefs against the Houston Texans on Saturday if Patrick Mahomes is unavailable, ESPN reports. 123overr

The Chiefs are preparing Mahomes to start against the Texans, although the 29-year-old quarterback is rehabilitating from a sprained upper right ankle he suffered in Sunday’s 21-7 win over the Cleveland Browns. But if Mahomes is unavailable, they’re confident Wentz can lead the Chiefs to victory.

“We have full confidence in Carson,” Reed said. “If he has to play, I think everybody, the coaches and the players, have full confidence that he can play. He’s been a starter in this league and had success. He’s got a good feel for this offense, he’s smart, he’s got a big arm. I like the way he carries himself. I like everything about him. He should be a starter in this league somewhere, so he’s one of the great players.”

Wentz, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 draft, was a key player for the Philadelphia Eagles’ franchise quarterback for the first five seasons of his career before being traded to the Indianapolis Colts in the 2021 draft. He then moved to the Washington Commanders the following year and then to the Los Angeles Rams in 2023 until the Chiefs brought him in as Mahomes’ backup this past offseason.

Reed also revealed that Mahomes once asked him why Wentz didn’t have a starting job in the NFL, and the Chiefs head coach believes the 31-year-old quarterback will have that job next season.

“That’s the conversation you hear from the players in that room,” Reed said. “Selfishly, I’d like to keep him in this position, but I know what’s going on with quarterbacks, and I think he’s a really good player.”  ( 123overr )
