The R&A, in collaboration with the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation, organized the 7th Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific golf tournament at Hoi Anna Shores Golf Club in Hoi An, Vietnam from March 6-9. 96 leading amateur golfers from 24 member countries participated in the competition. There are 6 Thai golfers competing: Achirayan Sriwong (39th in the world), Pimpisa Roprob (53rd in the world), Pimmada Wongthanawimok (104th in the world), Prim Prachnakorn (171st in the world), Kritchanya Kaophatthanasakun (241st in the world) and Kanlayarak Pongpithanon (613th in the world).
At the end of the third round, Janeth Wong, a 20-year-old Malaysian national golfer and world amateur ranking 123, showed hot form, hitting 8 birdies and losing only one bogey, finishing 18 holes with a 7-under par 64, overtaking to take the lead with a total score of 15-under par 198, with Soomin Hong, the second round leader, and Soomin Oh, two golfers from South Korea, three strokes behind with a total score of 12-under par 201 each.
Wong, an individual bronze medalist at the 2022 SEA Games in Vietnam, said after moving up from joint second to the leader, “Today, I only lost one bogey, which is according to plan. I tried to hit fairways and greens and tried to lose as few bogeys as possible. My score has a chance to rise. Today, I will rest well to prepare for the final round. I hope I can do well tomorrow.”
Nina Pimmada Wongthanawimok, a golfer from the University of Arizona, USA, accelerated to hit 5-under par 66 from making 6 birdies and losing only one bogey. Her total over three days is 8-under par 205, moving up from joint 13th to joint 6th with 3 other players, with a total score 7 strokes behind the leader. She said, “The wind was much lighter today than the past two days. The flag position is still not easy, but it is enough to hit close and make birdie putts. Today, my putting was better and more detailed, so I was able to make more birdie putts. Today’s score tells us that we are playing with more confidence. Not only did I make birdies close by, but I also made birdies far away. Tonight, I will do my homework on where I should hit tomorrow to make putting the easiest.”
The scores of the other 5 Thai golfers, Wan-On-Achirayan Sriwong, 3-time Thailand Ladies Amateur Open champion, shot another 3-under-par 68 for a total of 6-under-par 207 over three days, in 11th place with Nat-Kritchanya Kaopattanasakul, a member of the Thai national golf team that won the Cartini Cup in Singapore last year, who shot another 2-under-par 69, Fai-Pimpisa Rop, who shot 2-under-par 69 for a total score of 5-under-par 208, in joint 16th place, and Prim Prachnakorn Kreuan-ron, who shot 3-under-par 68, moving up to joint 29th place with a total score of 1-over-par 214.
