Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said he plans on having 26-year-old running back Rico Dowdle play a key role on offense and as a leader for Monday’s game against the Houston Texans, NFL Network reports.

Dowdle led the Cowboys with 83 carries for 374 yards, but with Ezekiel Elliott in the mix, the running back has only carried the ball more than 12 times in a game once, against the Pittsburgh Steelers, when he carried the ball 20 times for 87 yards. 

So, letting Dowdle get more touches makes sense, as he’s the Cowboys’ best running back, but he’s not even close right now. With Cooper Rush taking over for Dak Prescott, McCarthy wants the ground game to help ease the burden on the 30-year-old quarterback so he can get a consistent run. 

“You’ve got to give him the ball,” McCarthy said. “That’s my goal, to keep him playing. He’s the main guy on the offensive end.”

“Being a key player on the U.S.A. team’s ground team is great,” Dowdle added. “But above all, I have to get on the field and keep doing what I’m doing.”

The Cowboys are averaging just 19.7 points per game, 315.0 yards per game, 83.7 yards per game and are allowing 2.0 turnovers per game, their worst showing since McCarthy took over as head coach in 2020.

Dowdle also spoke about the Cowboys’ ground offense, saying, “I don’t necessarily say it’s bad. I know our numbers and stuff aren’t where we want them to be, but that’s just football.”  ( player1688 )
