Jonathan Mingo, 23, admitted he was a little surprised after being traded from the Carolina Panthers to the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday, having only been with the team for about a year and a half, NFL Network reports.

The Panthers selected Mingo from Ol Mees in the second round of the 2023 draft class. He has 55 catches for 539 yards in 24 games (19 starts) but has trouble generating yards running routes and has struggled with concentration. However, at 6-foot-2, he has the size and ability to be available if the Cowboys can get consistency out of the 23-year-old wideout.

“It surprised me a little bit because my agent said he didn’t think it was going to happen, the chances were slim,” Mingo said. “So that slim chance came up. I’m happy to be a Cowboy. It’s a new start for me, a new beginning. God put me here for a reason.”

The Cowboys traded Mingo for a fourth-round pick in 2025 and a seventh-round pick from Carolina, and Mike McCarthy believes the 23-year-old wide receiver would be a valuable asset to the Dallas offense.

‘You have to trust the draft process because you put so much into it. That grade always carries weight when he’s out there and ready to play. We definitely liked (Mingo) in the draft process and he has a lot of the characteristics that you look for. We’re excited about the opportunity to have him be a part of it.’ 

Before Mingo added, “There were a lot of things I knew I could have done better (in Carolina), just trying to be more consistent, trying to prove to them what I could be. (The Panthers) got me out of there, so that’s it. Now I’m here to prove to these guys what I can do and show them the best version of myself.” ( 123over )
